Sultan Razia

Sultan Razia was born around 1205 in Uttar Pradesh, India however her ancestral roots go back to the Turkish slaves in India. She held privileged status in both the harem with her mother and the court with her father, introducing her to politics at an early age. She was trained in warfare at an early age and often times acted as a regent for her father when he would go on military campaigns. Because she was trained to administer the kingdom, her father designated her as the heir. However, after his death, her half brother took the throne delaying her reign by about 6 months until his death. When she became ruler, she adopted a gender neutral style and demanded that she be called Sultan, rather than Sultana, which meant wife of the Sultan, claiming she was second to none. She was said to have possessed all the qualities of a ruler, treating each subject fairly and opting to mingle with her subjects rather than stay confined. At the time in India, the Mamluk Dynasty was a Muslim kingdom but Sultan Razia, conscious of the indigenous culture, sought to protect her Hindu subjects. She married once later in her life, to her childhood friend, Malik, who she was once involved with. Upon hearing that she was romantically involved with another man, he started a rebellion against her and won. To keep her power and the unity of her kingdom, she married Malik. She would later die with him in 1240 as they were leading an army to Delhi.
