Siti Chamamab Soeratno

Siti Chamamah is an Indonesia Islamic scholar and the former leader of Aisyiyah, Indonesia’s first all female Muslim organization. Her involvement with Islamic organizations and charities began early in life, when she joined the youth wing of Aisyiyah, an organization dedicated to female empowerment and charitable work. After finishing secondary school, she went on to pursue her bachelors at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, her Masters at Johns Hopkins School for Advanced Studies in the Social Science, and back to Gadjah Mada for her PhD. In addition to leading Aisyiyah for a decade, she also served as Dean of Muhammadiyah University of Malang, where she was known as an expert in Indonesian literature. As a proponent of the Islamization of knowledge, she believes that the adjective Islamic should refer to more than just strictly religious practices. Instead, she believes it should refer to all aspects of life, including democracy, equality, justice and the human norms of liberate.
