Nelisiwe Msomi

Nelisiwe Msomi is a health journalist and activist in South Africa who has dedicated her life to building a more inclusive Islam in her community in east Johannesburg. Her work seeks to celebrate both Islamic and African traditions and ensure that Black Muslims in South Africa are visible and no longer sidelined within the Muslim communities across the country. Both she and her sister attended an Islamic school growing up and Nelisiwe, whose birth name is isiZulu, was often criticized for incorporating her African cultural background into her religious culture and since then, she has fought for visibility of Black Muslims in the community. She is a former host of a podcast titled Mercy and Contentment Show, which highlights issues that Black Muslims in South Africa face. In addition to her work as an activist, she is also a journalist, holding a Bachelors Degree in Journalism from the University of Johannesburg. She currently works as a Health Journalist for South Africa’s Media24. In 2019, she contributed to the book “If This Be Madness: An Anthology to Honor the Life and Courage of Shamima Shaik”, which spotlights Shamima Shaikh, a South African Muslim women’s rights activist.
