Malala Yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai was born in July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Inspired by her fathers work as an educational activist, she began her activism at a young age writing a blog for BBC Urdu under a pen name about her experience in Taliban occupied Swat. In 2009, she started working as a Peer Educator at the Open Minds Pakistan Youth Program, helping students discuss social issues in a constructive way. The next year, in 2010, a New York Times documentary was made about her and she was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by Desmond Tutu. Her activism gained her increasing recognition in the international world and domestically in Pakistan, culminating in an assassination attempt on her life on 12 October, 2012 when she was shot by Pakistani Taliban gunman. She woke up from a coma 5 days later and underwent treatment for the injuries she sustained for nearly 4 months. The attack gained international attention and Malala traveled across the world in the months following her attack raising awareness about girls’ education and increasing their access to basic and continuing education. In her meeting with former President Obama, she confronted him about his drone strikes in Pakistan and the perpetuation of violence in her home country. Following her years of activism and advocacy for accessible education, she was named as a co recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017, making her the youngest winner of the prize. On July 15th, 2015 to celebrate her 18th birthday, Malala opened a school along the Lebanese-Syrian border for Syrian refugees, funded by her foundation The Malala Fund. She continued her education in England, following the assassination attempt, finishing her secondary studies before going on to study at Oxford studying Philosophy, Politics and Education. She graduated with her degree in the summer of 2020. Despite finishing her education in the UK, Malala has expressed a desire to return to her home country, following in the foot steps of one of her earliest role models, Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
