Khawla Bint Al-Azwar

Khawla bint al-Azwar was born in the 7th century in Mecca, now part of Saudi Arabia, into the Bani Assad tribe. Her family was one of the first families to convert to Islam in Mecca. In her later life, she became one of the most well known warriors in history. Her skill as a warrior was first demonstrated at the Battle of Santia-al-Uqab in an army led by her brother Zirrar. Her brother was injured at the battle but she, unidentifiable in her armor, rushed the Byzantine troops alone. Her identity was only made known when she was asked to identify herself by Khalid ibn Walid, one of the most famous male warriors of the time. Khawla also accompanied the Muslim army to the Battle of Ajnadin, where she worked as a medic, providing medical attention to wounded soldiers. After her brother Diraar was injured, she took his armor, weapons, and green shawl and and joined the battle, fighting the Byzantine soldiers who were attacking the Muslim troops. Because she was covered by the green shawl, the other soldiers believed her to be Khalid, who was leading the army. When he arrived though, the soldiers realized their mistake and Khawla was identified as the brave soldier. As a result of her bravery and her dedication, she is one of the most well known women in Islamic and military history. Several streets and schools are dedicated to her in Saudi Arabia and Jordan has issued a stamp in her honor. The first military college for women in the UAE is named after her and an all female unit of the Iraqi army bears her name.
