Halimah Bint Yacob



Halimah binti Yacob (@halimahyacob) was born in 1954 on August 23 in Singapore to an Indian father & an ethnic Malay mother. After her father passed away when she was 8 years old, she helped her mother to raise her four siblings by selling nasi Padang (rice with assorted dishes) in a roadside stall. After she finished her secondary schooling, Halimah started studying at the National University of Singapore, where she obtained a Bachelor of Law. Out of school, she began working at the National Trades Union Congress eventually becoming the director of the legal services department. She made the switch to politics in 2001, when she was elected as an MP. During her time in parliament, Halimah served as Minister of State of Ministry of Community Development, Youth, and Sports and of Ministry of Social and Family Development. In 2013, she became the first woman to hold the post of Speaker of Parliament. She resigned from this post in 2017 to run for election for the office of President. During her time as the 8th president of Singapore, she has worked on interregional data expansion & gender equality. She was inducted into the Singapore Council of Woman’s Organization’s Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2014 & awarded the @awaresingapore Heroine Award of the Year in 2011.
