Funmi Abari is a chemist and the founder of the Empower Us Project, a social enterprise that seeks to establish resilient communities. Much of their work has been focused in Gambia, despite Funmi living and studying in the United Kingdom. She studied chemistry at Queen Mary University of London and graduated in 2014 with first class honors. From there, she continued her studies at University of Leeds studying medicine and surgery. In addition to her social enterprise, she also founded the student collective The Race Against Medicine, an organization created to represent, celebrate and provide a platform for Black African and Caribbean students and professors in STEM to thrive. She made history at a young age as the first unelected member to make a speech in the House of Commons. In addition to her academic and activist work, she also founded the Institute of Mad Science. IMS is a co curricular project for secondary school students in London area to engage in after school science related activities. She founded it to address the inequality of teaching in the poorer parts of London. Funmi Abari is also a TedX speaker and the writer of the book Insight Into Medicine.
