Benazir Bhutto
Born 21st of June in Karachi, Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto was born to parents of mixed Kurdish and Sindhi descent. Her father was a famous, and wealthy, politician, and Bhutto grew up in a relatively privileged way because of this. She attended school at both Harvard and Oxford, studying philosophy and politics. Her goals to pursue a career in the Pakistani Foreign Service were altered when her father was assassinated in a military coup and she subsequently took control of her fathers socialist party, PPP, in 1977. She served as the leader of PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party) from 1982, which saw her elected as Prime Minister twice, once in 1988 and another time in 1993, and saw her as the Leader of the Opposition in 1990 and in 1997. Her political terms were marked with an increase of civilian oversight for the military and attempts to advocate for women rights, however, there were also accusations of corruption directed at her and her husband. Among the conservatives and military, she was seen as someone with too strong liberal convictions and too many associations with the west. Because of this and the dangers towards her life in Pakistan, she went into self-exile in Dubai, until 2007 when she returned to Pakistan, with the intention of becoming the next Prime Minister. These hopes when someone assumed to be a Taliban affiliate assassinated her. Although her tenure as a politician is controversial (as is the case with all politicians), she is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most important political figures.
